Blog tour: Recenze - Uses for Boys

About book:

Uses for BoysAnna remembers a time before boys, when she was little and everything made sense. When she and her mom were a family, just the two of them against the world. But now her mom is gone most of the time, chasing the next marriage, bringing home the next stepfather. Anna is left on her own—until she discovers that she can make boys her family. From Desmond to Joey, Todd to Sam, Anna learns that if you give boys what they want, you can get what you need. But the price is high—the other kids make fun of her; the girls call her a slut. Anna's new friend, Toy, seems to have found a way around the loneliness, but Toy has her own secrets that even Anna can't know.

Then comes Sam. When Anna actually meets a boy who is more than just useful, whose family eats dinner together, laughs, and tells stories, the truth about love becomes clear. And she finally learns how it feels to have something to lose—and something to offer. Real, shocking, uplifting, and stunningly lyrical,   Uses for Boys  is a story of breaking down and growing up.

About author:

Erica Lorraine
ScheidtWhen Erica was a kid all she did was write. She dropped out of high school and attended the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University where she was surrounded by writers and artists.

But then, in Erica's early twenties, she got a job. She worked hard at that job for 15 years and didn't write a word. Then this happened: Erica walked into a bookstore and bought two books by Francesca Lia Block. No particular reason, she just liked their covers. Then Erica read everything Francesca wrote. She read all the YA she could. She still does. Erica think's the world that happens between 13 and 17 is everything.
She quit her job. Studied writing. And then spent three and a half years writing Uses for Boys. Now she's working on a new novel and it's like falling down a hole. Writing her first novel taught her nothing about writing the next one.

Okay... I haven't expected so much from reading this book. Well, I loved the cover from the start, but after that, I was little confused. I read synopsis and I knew it will be hard topic to write about. I admire author for writing such a beautiful book with all emotions. This is story about Anna who tells us about her childhood and teenage times. She lives with her mother in big house. Anna was always good and she only wanted love from her mother. But Anna's father left them and Anna's mother became being nervous. There were many stepfathers who came to Anna's life. Well, she didn't notice. She never liked them, even she tried to be part of family. But it didn't work. She wanted her mother to care about her. And this is the start of story, the reason why Anna is Anna.

Anna never had friends. When she was 12 (or 13), boys started to care about her. And she let them. As she said - I had no mother, I had no fother, I need anyone else.. Boys became her family, even they wanted only sex. And she let them. Other kids called her slut. But Anna didn't care. And as she grow up, she started to think about other things - Is this life worth living? Cut off classes, living on your own, be only "toy" of boys? Read Uses for Boys and you will see...

Tumblr_mg4fr5o79d1rl2fxpo1_400_largeThe style of writing is sometimes really strange. Well, not strange like "strange", but it confused me sometimes. Erica created unique for book for mature and teenage girls. This is not book for everyone. Maybe it takes long time to understand, but I think this topic is really hard to think about. Trying to be part of something, searching for love, trying to understand... I can admit that I cried in the end of book. It was so emotive I couldn't stand that. I loved characters. The main character, Anna, is really strong girl who was incredible. Well, living on your own when you are 16 years old? Can you imagine that? I loved also other characters just like Toy, Sam, Jane and others..

Okay.. In the end I can admit I would recommend this book., especially to young girls. You should appreciate what you have and not to argue with your parents. If you read this book, you know that family is really important. You might not like reading style but other is moving and deep-thinking.

CZECH REVIEW:

Uses for BoysAnotace:

Anna si pamatuje dobu před kluky, kdy byla malá a vše dávalo smysl. Kdy ona a její matka byly rodina, jenom ony dvě proti světu.

Skutečný, šokující, povznášející a neuvěřitelně emotivní - Uses for boys je příběh o zhroucení a růstu.

Sama jsem s ním měla poměrně problém, protože autorka psala příběh naprosto bezprostředně a některé pasáže místy opakovala (ve stylu I have no mother, I have no father...).
